Have you heard of National Beer Day? We have! We love a good beer here in the Spotlight Newport HQ.
I do find it curious that this event is held so close to Father’s Day, don’t you?
National Beer Day in Britain is on June 15th and that is also the date Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. Article 35 of the great charter stated:
‘Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn, namely the London quarter.’
So Ale was so important in the UK in 1215 that it was even mentioned in one of the most significant legal documents in history. Then again, back then the water in rivers wasn’t very clean, and most of the time it was unsuitable for drinking. I can’t imagine drinking water from The Usk, can you? Today beer and pubs are still a central part of British life.
There have definitely been a few changes in the way beer looks, and tastes these days. That’s before you even come on to lagers, gluten-free, and low carb ones as well.
We would love to know what your favourite beer is, and what bar you like to drink it in. We are on the lookout for the best independent bar, pub or restaurant in the Newport area and we need your help! Let us know here!
