We were treated at our networking event in April to a presentation from Mark Turner from Ebbw Vale Wheelchair Sports Club (EVWSC). Mark explained how, as the Secretary for the EVWSC, he is helping to raise awareness of the club.
EVWSC caters for multi-sports which includes Rugby Union 7’s, wheelchair rugby league (tag) and the Dragons wheelchair rugby 5’s, which is a variant of the Paralympic game ‘Murderball’. Wheelchair basketball, boccia, pickleball and more are on their way too!
The club are working closely with Disability Sport Wales, and other relevant bodies to establish a much-needed hub for wheelchair sports, played using special sports wheelchairs. They aim to be a one-stop sports club for Blaneau Gwent and surrounding areas in South Wales, giving everyone the chance to play sports, whether able-bodied or not.
We watched a very touching video showing how, with the aid of the club, families with members who suffered from a disability were all able to play sport together, with the wheelchairs provided for the family. The events are fully inclusive, catering for everyone – wheelchair user or not, with all the equipment provided.
The EVWSC host events every Saturday, from 12-2 at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre. Why not pop along with the family and try something new?
EVWSC needs help to keep providing this service though. As a new club, there is a lot of equipment the club need, and here is where you can be a part of something amazing. The club needs things for their rugby pitch (posts, corner flags etc), balls etc – all of which can be branded with your company logo – right through to the specialist sports wheelchairs. You can even help sponsor a team and appear on their team kit, social media, flyers and banners.
